Gonna Take My Bike Out

7 Jan

We are a very active family. I teach Pilates, which I love! I used to be an avid spinner and loved boot camp classes, but unfortunately due to a shoulder injury I can’t be as hard-core as I used to be. Now I have to modify most of my workouts. Most recently, I’ve taken to running because it doesn’t hurt my shoulder.  This is a pretty major move on my part because I HATE running.  Nothing about it is enjoyable to me. I did find an app thanks to a dear friend called Couch to 5K, which has definitely made running more enjoyable.  If you hate running but are interested in attempting a 5k or 10k, I definitely recommend checking it out.  My hubby also works out 3 – 4 days a week (right now doing the Insanity videos — which are definitely insane!). We also both love to go on hikes and before we had kids we used to enjoy riding our bikes.

For Father’s day 2 years ago, I got Larry the ibert bike seat so that we could take Charlie along on our bike rides.  Once we had Henry, I  would take Henry for a walk in the stroller while Larry and Charlie went for a bike ride. At one point we ended up on the same corner and a random stranger was nice enough to take our picture.

Despite being super happy that Charlie and Larry got to spend some great QT together, I was also instantly jealous. Now Larry and Charlie have their own little ritual where they ride their bike to Menchies for some frozen yogurt and then they ride to the park.  I loved that they have this special time together, but I also couldn’t help but feeling that Henry and I were left behind.

I mean, how cute are they?

I mean, how cute are they?

Hubby knew I was jealous but didn’t trust me with my own ibert seat, because as many of my friends and family know, I tend to be a little bit accident prone. While the ibert seat is supposedly the easiest thing to use, he was and is still convinced that I would lose my balance.  He’s probably right.  I swear I am super aware of my surroundings, yet somehow accidents find me. I may have mentioned this before but a few of my friends had an over/under as to whether or not I would walk down the wedding aisle with some sort of injury.  Sadly, I did! I fell down the stairs a week before my wedding and got a gash on my left hand.  Yep, on the ring finger!  Guess who has no shots of her wedding ring on her finger on her wedding day? I also stubbed my toe the morning of the wedding. I am that accident prone! Anyway, I digress.

My birthday was December 27th and Larry got me the perfect gift! The InStep Sierra Bicycle double trailer.  It’s almost like a stroller that is attached to the back of your bike so that you can comfortably take you lil ones on a bike ride.  It was the perfect gift!  It also came with an additional handle and a 3rd wheel so that it can be used as a stroller.  How awesome is that? We can go for a bike ride, park our bikes and convert the trailer into a stroller!

We set it up that day and went on our first bike ride as a family.

Here I am with both boys, ringing the bell on my bike (per Charlie’s request).

We rode to the park. Here’s what it looks like with both boys inside.

And here’s a video of our first ride.

I highly recommend both the ibert seat and the InStep Double Bike trailer.  Both of my kids love being outside so much and so do we.  Now we have another fun activity to do as a family.  Thanks, Larry for a great present!

A Madagascar Halloween

5 Nov

I love Halloween so much.  Not only does it mark the beginning of the Fall and Winter holiday seasons, which are my fave, but it also gives me the opportunity to relive the excitement and mystery of a holiday filled with costumes, candy, fear and fun through the eyes of a toddler. That, and I really like to dress up. Luckily, I married a guy Continue reading

Owl Turn Green!

25 May

One of our greatest challenges has been teaching Charlie the concept of an appropriate wake up time.  He’s 2. Why doesn’t he have this down already? ;)

Charlie goes to bed at 7pm and generally wakes up around 6:30am. While we wish he slept a little later, we are ok with this wake up time.  Sometimes, however, he wakes up at 6am.  Rarely, the dreaded 5:30am wakeup call rears its ugly head, but when it does we end up starting our day earlier than plan.  Or should I say we used to start our day earlier than planned!  We finally discovered a way to keep him patiently in his crib until at least 6:30 in the morning.

About 6 weeks ago we discovered the OK To Wake! Owl With Night-Light & Music, Nap Timer.  This clock doesn’t function as an aid to teach children how to tell time.   It is a clock, surrounded by an Owl stuffed animal.  We set the alarm on the clock to 6:30am.  Now, every morning at the set time, the Owl lights up indicating it is okay to ask for Charlie to ask for mommy and daddy.

This amazing invention took no training.  I simply showed him what the owl looked like when it turned green.  Before he went to bed I asked him if he remembered what the owl looked like when it turned green.  He said yes. I then told him that it will stay white until it is time to wake up.  When the owl turns green you can call for mommy and daddy.  I asked him if he understood and he said yes.  The next morning he did just that.  He woke up at 6am, but didn’t call for us. Instead he sang songs in his crib until the Owl turned green.  Such a genius device!

Here it is in action.  I wish I caught a little more of the footage before the clock turned green. He was singing Happy Birthday to all of his stuffed animals before the light went on.

Generally, he doesn’t wait as patiently as he does in this video, but you get the idea…

Great Things!

23 May

1.  Greatest hubby ever!  Vacuuming, while carrying Henry and drinking coffee…

Nothing could be more sexy

2.  The brothers are falling in love…

Cuddle time! Watching Barney, of course…

3.  Henry rolled over for the first time unassisted this morning!

4.  As of this morning, my stomach is starting to get some definition back.  I’ve still got a long way to go, but progress has been made!

5. Last, but certainly not least, Henry gave us a 5 1/2 hour stretch last night.  Hallelujah!

This is Halloween!

1 Nov

I’m having blogger’s guilt. It feels like it has been over a month since my last post. In reality, it has been two weeks, but that may as well be an eternity. For some reason it used to be easier to find the time to write. I’m going to make an effort to post more often… I promise.

For now, I am going to take the easy route out and post Continue reading

Loving the Lovie

2 Aug

Charlie took to his lovie, an elephant he calls, “Doby,” at 4 months old.  He used to throw it over his face to fall asleep. Of course, I thought he was going to suffocate and was super paranoid about it, but turns out, he moves it when he can’t breathe.  Until recently, Doby didn’t get much face time other than when Charlie was in his crib.  However, Charlie’s new favorite thing to do is reach through the crib’s rails to grab out Doby.  He has 6 of them, so locating and reaching a Doby isn’t that difficult a task.  The past few weeks, he has been grabbing one or all of his Dobys and cuddling with them on the floor.

As you may have read, Charlie is not a cuddler, nor does he sleep in any location besides his crib or in a pack and play.  I have tried to get him to sleep or even just cuddle in bed with us, but to no avail. It’s never happened.  So, you can imagine my surprise when after a few minutes of rolling around on the floor with Doby I found Charlie like this…

I Guess He was Tired!

He must be going through a growth spurt? I couldn’t help but take pictures because I was so shocked.  He fell asleep on our bedroom floor while my husband was in the shower and I was getting dressed. We were beyond loud, I even had the hair dryer going, but he didn’t budge.  After we found him, I tried to wake him up because he fell asleep an hour before his nap.  He simply open his eyes, sighed and fell back asleep.  He stayed asleep in that spot for over an hour and 20 minutes.  When he woke up, he didn’t even cry for attention.  I heard him playing so I ran upstairs to find him singing songs and smiling at himself in the mirror.

Charlie has been on 1 nap a day since mid June.  Today, he is on his second nap. He went down at 3pm and is still passed out.  I guess we have one tired boy on our hands.  Now the big question is, do I wake him or let him sleep?

Sing, Sing a Song.

27 Jul

Charlie has a few songs in his repertoire. Unfortunately, I do not have any of them on video.  I will make that my homework this week.  He started “singing” a couple of weeks ago, but I didn’t really realize he was singing until a few days ago.

Since he started walking, we started a bedtime routine that works for both of us. I run the bath while he bolts from bedroom to bedroom.  When the water is ready for him, I call to him with a song, “do do do dooo.”  Every time I do the “do” he comes running into the bathroom doing the baby sign language sign for bath.  He totally gets that this song means come to the bathroom.  Well today I was running the tub and did the call, but he didn’t respond. I patiently waited for him in the bathroom, but stopped calling for him.  A few minutes later he ran to the bathroom door, made the sign for bath and hummed “do do do doo.”  He then ran into the bathroom ready to take his bath. Seriously?  I can’t believe he can hum the bath time call.  Even more unbelievable, I can’t believe HE is telling me when HE is ready to take a bath.  Where did my baby go?

He also hums (in perfect tune) his ABCs up to the letter G.  Today he even sounded out the letters ah, buh, ceh, duh, eh.  I couldn’t believe it! After he finishes his song he claps his hands at his achievement.  He gets even more excited when he starts singing and we join in.  Honestly, it just blows my mind that he is growing up so quickly. I know kids sing, but I still can’t believe my little boy is old enough to sing his ABCs (kind of).

His 3rd song is, “The Itsy Bitsy Spider.”  I find this one the most impressive because he does the hand movements along with it.  Granted, not all of them. And, I’m not sure anyone would realize it besides me, but he does do it. :)

I’m super impressed with him, which I guess makes me the typical doting parent.

Coloring with Charlie

10 Jul

Before we left for Hawaii we decided to set up Charlie’s toddler table and chairs. We got a folding table and folding chairs because space is limited and we wanted the option to store them when not used.  Charlie was intrigued by the chair, but wanted to get off almost immediately.  That is until I handed him his first crayons.

For the next 5 minutes, my ever curious toddler actually sat still and colored.

By “color” I mean he ate the crayons and chicken scratched a few lines here and there, but I still count it as his first drawing.

Our FAMILY Vacation

8 Jul

In early June my MIL and FIL took all of their children and grandchildren to Maui to celebrate their 70th birthdays.  In total our posse rolled 13 deep.  As a parent, I had two big fears leading up to this trip, 1) the flight and 2) how Charlie would handle the time change.  Thankfully, neither ended up being anything to worry about.

Okay, I’m gonna cram a lot into one post. You ready?

Navigating the airport was much easier than we expected.  We were lucky enough to have a seat on the plane for Charlie so we were able to bring his car seat.  We made our way through the airport with car seat thanks to the Go Go Kidz car seat attachment.  The attachment turns the car seat into a stroller — pure genius!

The flight over was also much easier than expected.  Charlie napped for the first 2 hours — hooray!  The next 3 were a little less manageable, but not nearly as bad as we expected.  Larry and I just took turns walking up and down the single isle plane.  The passengers were not happy with us, but we didn’t care.

I've got my book, I'm ready to fly!

Make way for me!

We stayed at the Fairmont Kea Lani in Wailea and could not have asked for a better set up.

View of our Cabanas at night *we had 2 of them

Every room was a suite, which meant that Larry and I actually got to stay awake and hang out after we put Charlie down for bed.  Had we shared a room, we would have had to go to sleep at the same time as Charlie.  Instead, we got to hang out on the Lanai or watch tv or even get a babysitter while we went out for dinner one night.  Charlie also decided to adjust to the time change immediately.  We didn’t have any early morning wake ups after the first night.  It’s like he knew we were all on vacation.

The trip was 6 days of pure bliss. Traveling to Maui with just Larry and Charlie wouldn’t have been very relaxing because parent duty is 24/7.  That doesn’t leave much time for relaxation.  Having the grandparents and aunts/uncles around allowed for each of us to take a much needed break every once in a while.  If you get the opportunity and you have a super loving and helpful family, I highly suggest going on vacation with them… especially when you have kids.

It was also great for all of the cousins to hang out and play together everyday.  We live in Southern California, but Charlie’s cousins don’t.  This means they don’t get to spend much quality time together.  This trip made up for that, but also showed us what we are missing not living near family.

Here, try a raisin!

Nanny and Poppy's Dream Vacation

This post wouldn’t be complete without a family photo and a few pictures of the gorgeous Maui sunset.

All Smiles on Vacation

A typical Maui sunset... breathtaking.

Most AMAZING sunset ever...

The flight home was not as easy as the flight over.  If you saw my previous post, you’d see that American Airlines did nothing to make it a pleasant experience.  We made up for our awful plane ride home with a pimpin’ pick up from the airport.  We ordered a town car (it was cheaper than a taxi), but got picked up in a stretch limo!  So, the three of us got to ride home with an abundance of room and our legs sprawled.

Leg room, glorious leg room!

Thank you Nanny and Poppy for the most wonderful vacation we could ever have asked for.

Hooray for Maui!

*I will try to post soon with my suggestions for packing when traveling with a toddler.
